HEADACHES FROM HELL: EXERTIONAL HEADACHES
Another type of headache which has ironically become more common as society has become more health conscious is the exertional headache, affecting as many as 10 per cent of all headache sufferers. Again, this type of headache is more prevalent among men than women.
Exertional headaches ordinarily commence during a session of intensive exercise and often involve severe pain around the back of the head. The vast majority of these headaches disappear within a few hours, but are in many cases usually preventable.
Exertional headaches result ? as the name implies ? from excessive straining, especially in those instances in which the muscles of the neck are highly stressed. If those muscles at the base of the skull are inadvertently pulled or torn, the resultant headache may persist for days. Protracted exertional headaches are, however, for the most part rare.
If exertional-headache pain persists, professional assistance should be obtained as soon as possible before embarking on a follow-up intensive exercise regime, thus ensuring that no damage has occurred to the cervical discs of the neck or to the supporting muscle region.
Consider the following reminders to prevent exertional headaches:
Make certain that you are sufficiently warmed up before commencing any intensive exercise program, especially in colder weather.
Try not to flex your neck when executing exercises for body parts such as the legs and chest.
Keep yourself well hydrated while exercising, especially in the hotter months – keeping up your fluid intake is a vital part of any exercise program.
Make certain you warm down after intensive exercise and especially after a competitive event.
It is also worth remembering that exercising in extreme heat may itself bring on exertional headaches, as can a high caffeine intake (in many soft drinks as well as coffee, some teas and chocolate) and other chemical stimulants.
If you still suffer exertional headaches despite these precautions, try exercising for shorter periods or at different times in the day. Some people find that they are more vulnerable to exertional headaches if they have not eaten a balanced meal at least one hour prior to (though not immediately before) their exercise session.
