HEADACHES FROM HELL: CLUSTER HEADACHES
Although migraine headaches can be frighteningly painful, the cluster headache is in a class of its own for causing unbearable head pain. Cluster headaches get their name from the fact that they last for several minutes to three hours on each occasion, but may return several times each day, for weeks on end, thus clustering for months before subsiding.
What makes cluster headaches so excruciating is that the immense pain they inflict comes again and again in seemingly unending waves. The pain they cause is drill-like and searing ? so intense and disruptive of bodily rhythms that sufferers are often rendered breathless and faint.
Although only 1 per cent of the population experience cluster attacks, this type of headache affects men four times as often as women. Cluster headaches are particularly prevalent amongst drinkers and smokers, possibly because these activities may serve to irritate the facial nerves involved in a cluster-headache attack.
Usually affecting just one side of the face, cluster headaches are described as the feeling of having a ‘hot poker’ driven through one’s eye. The eye involved is likely to become red and teary, with blurred vision, contracted pupil and drooping eyelid. Nasal congestion, runny nose and facial sweating are common symptoms associated with a cluster-headache attack.
Some sufferers report as many as eight attacks daily, commencing at virtually the same time each day and during the same season each year. Cluster headaches may remain dormant for a period of years, only to flare up again unexpectedly.
