HEADACHES FROM HELL: MIGRAINE HEADACHES
The International Headache Society divides migraines into two categories known as common and classic.
Common migraine According to the International Headache Society, a common migraine is defined as a pulsating severe headache, located on one side of the head, especially in the forehead or temple areas. In addition to the intense pain, common migraines are usually associated with nausea and/or vomiting, combined with an unpleasant degree of sensitivity to noise and light.
Classic migraine What distinguishes the classic migraine from the more common variety is the presence of an ‘aura’, believed to be the result of a neurological disturbance which sometimes signals the advent of a migraine half an hour or so prior to its actual onset. Those who suffer from classic migraines describe an aura as a primarily visual experience in which lights flash and whirl wildly, distorting the visual field in dramatic ways, one of which includes the sudden presence of black holes before one’s eyes.
The visual episodes associated with auras can be so chaotic that the migraine sufferers may succumb to dizziness or even black out. A few people are said to find the disruptions to their visual field to be intellectually stimulating, if not euphoric. In my time as a student at Oxford, it was commonly reported that Lewis Carroll took his inspiration for the story of Alice in Wonderland from an aura preceding a classic migraine.
Migraine episodes range from occasional incidents to chronic onslaughts, lasting anywhere from hours to unbroken days in which the sufferer is virtually incapacitated. Exposure to even low-level noise and bright lights can be excruciatingly painful, while almost any strong smell can be nauseating and the slightest movement of the head unbearable.
No one is entirely certain just what causes migraine, but one current hypothesis targets the spasmodic expansion and contraction of the arteries responsible for transporting blood to the brain. Although migraines may be triggered by stress and fatigue, they commonly occur when there is a ‘let-up’ or hiatus in a high-pressured and highly intense work schedule, an observation consistent with the surprisingly common Saturday morning migraine or ‘day-off migraine.
Among the long list of notorious dietary culprits known to trigger migraines are:
chocolate;
red wine;
strong cheese; and
possibly monosodium glutamate (MSG).
The theory is that the first three foods contain substances reputed to be capable of disturbing the flow of chemical messengers in the brain called ‘neurotransmitters’, whose job it is to carry electrical impulses from one brain cell to another, affecting amongst other things the rate of blood flow to the brain.
