GUIDE TO HERBS: COMFREY, CORN SILK, COUCH GRASS AND CRANESBILL
Comfrey
Symphytum officinale
Description: A member of the borage group, the plant is a clump of hairy leaves with a deep root which draws nutrients from the soil. The lower leaves can be up to 20 cms long, decreasing in size as they go up the stem.
Uses: The foliage and root of this plant contain a nitrogenous, crystalline substance called allantoin which is a cell proliferant. It has a soothing and healing effect upon every organ it comes in contact with. Comfrey may be taken internally or used externally for broken bones, sores and because of the cell-growing action, speeds up healing. A poultice of freshly bruised leaves applied to a burn or wound, will increase the healing process and minimize inflammation. In Ireland the fresh young leaves are eaten to improve the blood and circulation. NOTE, Comfrey is poisonous and in large amounts, or for long periods of time, is cumulative. Seek advice from your naturopath.

Cranesbills
Geranium maculatum
