PETS WITH ECZEMA AND EVENING PRIMROSE OIL
As a result of some studies done on dogs with allergic eczema, some vets are now recommending evening primrose oil for dogs with bad skin conditions.
The Royal Veterinary College conducted studies with evening primrose oil, and also with evening primrose with added fish oils, on 16 atopic dogs with dermatitis.
The symptoms studied were itch, dryness, coat condition, scale, erythema, and oedema. All the symptoms except itch responded well. There was new hair growth in previously affected areas of the body, which were now healing. In the second stage of the study, twelve dogs were also given fish oils. However, no great further improvements were seen, possibly because many of the dogs had reached such an improved state at the end of stage 1.
Since these studies, another Efamol formulation has been given to some dogs with encouraging results. The formulation, called Efaderm, combines evening primrose oil with its vitamin and mineral co-factors.
