GROWING UP WITH DIABETES

For everyone, being a teenager is an exciting and confusing time. It is a time when you start moving away from your parents and exploring life on your own. You want to do your own thing, and at the same time fit in with your friends – wear the right kind of clothes, eat the same, and stay out late at night. It can be very embarrassing being the odd one out. As a teenager, your parents always seem to be nagging you – clean your room, don’t come home late, have you done your homework? So you rebel and then feel guilty because you love them really. The older generation just does not seem to understand you. You want to burst out into the world and do great things and suddenly it all seems very large and frightening and you feel rather lost
Nowadays, the world can seem very unkind if you leave school ready to work, then find you cannot get a job. You start off applying for the exciting jobs, then the possible ones, then any jobs. Being turned down by prospective employers is no fun for anyone. Being unemployed is depressing and boring. If you have been lucky enough to get a job or go on to further education, this too has its good and bad moments. You want to do well and create a good impression and there is a lot to take in all at once. Your safe circle of school-friends has moved on and you have to start making new friends.
