Fennel
Foeniculum vulgare
Description: It has the typical feathery foliage and umbrella formation of the flowers of the umbelliferous herbs, closely resembling the dill plant. It is hardy and grows along roadsides throughout Australia, flowering in summer.

Description: Feverfew is a member of the chrysanthemum family and grows as a weed in many gardens. It has many daisy-like flowers, yellow and white and the yellow centre is flat. It is a perennial and has a strong smell which repels bees.
Uses: It is used as a tonic for nervousness, promotes menstruation, prevents migraine, headache, fever, tension. It repels insects, it is said to be good to plant around the house.

Description: Belonging to the onion family, garlic has long flat leaves above the ground and a large bulb, made up of many smaller bulbs, underground.

Eucalyptus globulus
Description: Native to Tasmania, the blue gum has large leathery leaves studded with oil glands which are highly aromatic. The flowers appear in large creamy clusters. It is one of the tallest species of eucalypt.
Uses: The oil is used as an aromatic and antiseptic. Externally it is used for burns, cuts, ulcers, and sores. Inhaled, it clears the nose and lungs, relieves the symptoms of bronchitis and asthma. It can also be used as an insect repellant.
Euphorbia
Euphorbia hirta
Description: A leafless perennial up to a meter in height which resembles a cactus. It has small, bright yellow flowers.
Uses: Relaxes the bronchi and is used to treat asthma. The latex is used to treat warts. Its main uses are as an anti-asthmatic and for upper respiratory catarrh.
Evening Primrose
Oenothera biennis
Description: Named evening primrose because the flowers usually open in the evening, it is a biennial plant. In the first year flattened leaves grow at ground level. In the second year a stem grows from the centre to over lm. It produces fragrant yellow flowers in summer.
Uses: The oil extracted from the seeds contains omega-6 fatty acids such as GLA. The oil is used for coughs, colds, gastrointestinal and menstrual problems and for menopausal depression. The oil is used internally and externally for skin eruptions and sores. Primrose oil can also help lower cholesterol and blood pressure. Many clinical studies and trials have been done using Efamol, a brand of evening primrose oil, with very positive results in the treatment of eczema and other skin disorders.

Euphrasia officinalis
Description: A small annual which grows on limestone based soils. The leaves are deeply cut and the flowers are white to purple with yellow markings.
Uses: Used in eye lotion for conjunctivitis, it possesses anti-inflammatory qualities for ailments of the eyes. Main uses are upper respiratory catarrh, sinusitis and conjunctivitis.

Dandelion
Taraxacum officinale
Description: Leaves grow in a rosette on the ground from which emerges a central stalk with milky sap. The flower is yellow and has a pungent smell. The root is a thick brown tap root. The name comes from the French for lion’s tooth, dent de lion. Leaves and the root are used.
Uses: Dandelion affects the kidneys, gallbladder, liver, pancreas and blood. Its main use would be for liver complaints or as a diuretic. Dandelion stimulates the liver increasing its detoxifying action. Because of this action dandelion is a valuable blood purifying herb and may be used in some skin diseases. Dandelion is also a very useful diuretic. The dandelion leaves can be eaten as part of a salad and will help prevent liver problems and gallstones. The dried roots are roasted and used to make a coffee substitute. It is a tonic for dyspepsia and a laxative in mild constipation.
Dill
Anethum graveolens
Description: An annual with one stalk up to three-quarters of a meter, with feathery leaves and flowers in an umbrella shape (like fennel) which are yellow. Small black seeds are produced in autumn.
Uses: Fresh as flavorings with potatoes, eggs, chicken, and fish, it is a popular summer culinary herb. The seeds can be made into a tea to ease indigestion and children’s colic.
Dong Quai
Angelica sinensis
Description: Long thin roots, bold meter long reddish purple foliage to 2m, greenish-white flowers in the umbel or umbrella like formation of dill and fennel. The plant is extremely fragrant in all parts. The rhizome is used.
Uses: Dong quai is used in the treatment of most female gynecological ailments, in particular menstrual cramps, premenstrual tension, menopause and irregularity. It is used to treat hot flushes during menopause and is also nourishing to the blood, being rich in vitamin E and vitamin B12. It is also useful in the treatment of anemia. Dong quai is very useful in combination with other herbs such as black cohosh, queen of the meadow, red raspberry, blessed thistle, and Vitex agnus-castus.

Comfrey
Symphytum officinale
Description: A member of the borage group, the plant is a clump of hairy leaves with a deep root which draws nutrients from the soil. The lower leaves can be up to 20 cms long, decreasing in size as they go up the stem.
Uses: The foliage and root of this plant contain a nitrogenous, crystalline substance called allantoin which is a cell proliferant. It has a soothing and healing effect upon every organ it comes in contact with. Comfrey may be taken internally or used externally for broken bones, sores and because of the cell-growing action, speeds up healing. A poultice of freshly bruised leaves applied to a burn or wound, will increase the healing process and minimize inflammation. In Ireland the fresh young leaves are eaten to improve the blood and circulation. NOTE, Comfrey is poisonous and in large amounts, or for long periods of time, is cumulative. Seek advice from your naturopath.
Corn Silk
Zea mays
Description: The stigmas or long fine hairs on the female fruit are the silk. The fruit in autumn has yellow, red, purple or brown kernel on a cob.
Uses: Combined with agrimony and made into a tea it is used to treat bedwetting. Also used as a diuretic, for prostate problems, bladder irritations, and in the treatment of prostatitis.
Couch Grass
Agropyrum repens
Description: A grass with a slender rhizome, hollow stems up to half a meter high, with 5 to 7 leaves. The leaves are flat and rough on top with a central vein.
Uses: Possessing antibiotic qualities, it acts as an antiseptic diuretic and is used commonly with bladder complaints and prostatic enlargements when combined with hydrangea.
Cranesbills
Geranium maculatum
Description: A perennial up to half a meter in height, it is erect, hairy and branchless. The leaves are cleft and toothed and the flowers are rosy pink. The fruit has five cells each containing seeds. The root is brown, white inside, 4 to 8 cms and covered in branchlets. This is the part used.
Uses: In cases of diarrhea, hemorrhoids, peptic ulcers, thrush, and hemorrhaging in the digestive tract. It can be used as a mouthwash for mouth ulcers and sore throats as a gargle.
