TYPES OF SKIN CANCER: BASAL CELL CARCINOMA AND SQUAMOUS CELL CARCINOMA
There are three main types of skin cancer. The most common is basal cell carcinoma, while the least common but most dangerous is melanoma. The third type is squamous cell carcinoma. Most skin cancers are totally painless in the early stages, so it is as well to be overly suspicious when it comes to detecting them.
Basal cell carcinoma
These common skin cancers, occurring in 6000 people each year in Australia, normally occur on the face and back. Generally, they are slow-growing, painless, insidious lesions, although there are certain varieties which can be very aggressive. A basal cell carcinoma in the early stages will often look like a red, shiny, persistent pimple, but later may bleed or ulcerate. CERVICAL CANCER: CAUSES AND TREATMENT
Cancer of the cervix was the most common form of gynecological cancer until the Pap smear. Now cancer of the cervix takes second place to cancer of the uterus, but not by much.
Early intervention as a result of pap smear campaigns reduces the appearance of full blown cancer of the cervix by 20 per cent. Considering that pap smears detect 90 per cent of cervical cancers, pap smear campaigns have a long way to go.
The doctor’s inadequate technique is an ongoing problem with smear tests. One study in the United States shows that 88 per cent of samples taken by doctors were ineffective as anti cancer screens.
Early changes symptomatic of cancer of the cervix occur in a women’s second and third decade of life. In its life threatening capacity cancer of the cervix appears when a woman enters her fifth and sixth decade. In these women the cancer presents as a vaginal discharge or vaginal bleeding between the periods.
The cause of cancer of the cervix is still not clear. 90 per cent of cervical cancer cells display evidence of infection with the Herpes Type 2 virus. Even more common is the presence of the Human Papilloma Wart Virus (HPV). The concurrent presence of both viruses associated with the habit of cigarette smoking probably primes candidates for an early case of cervical cancer.
Given the relationship of cervical cancer to sexually transmitted disease, it is not surprising that cancer of the cervix is more often found in women with a history of early frequent sexual experience involving multiple partners. Nuns rarely if ever suffer from cancer of the cervix.
Detected in its early stages cancer of the cervix allows cure via cautery or cone biopsy. Detected in its later stages treatment begins with hysterectomy. When treated early with a cone biopsy 98 per cent of women contracting cervical cancer will live a further ten years.
Home Remedies
Cancer of the cervix is another case for the regular use of condoms and avoiding cigarettes. The eradication of Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) and herpes is a difficult exercise. Moderate exercise, a good sleep pattern and dietetic enhancement of the immune system are all recommended interventions. HOW EVENING PRIMROSE OIL MAY BE WORKING IN CANCER
The active ingredient in evening primrose oil is gammalinolenic acid (GLA), and it is the GLA which gives the oil its cancer-controlling properties. It maybe working in three different ways:
1. Lipid peroxides. What the researchers have found is that when human cancer cells are exposed to polyunsaturated fatty acids in the laboratory, the cells generate large amounts of substances called lipid peroxides, and die.
Several different PUFAs have been tried to see which one is the most effective. GLA seems to be the best PUFA – it is highly toxic to malignant cells, but has no toxic effects whatsoever on normal cells.
It is now known that the majority of human and animal cancers contain low levels of lipid peroxides. There is evidence that lipid peroxides play a role in regulating cell division. In most cancers, the reason for the low levels of lipid peroxides seems to be a low concentration of PUFA substrate, which is needed for the formation of peroxide.
This may on the face of it seem paradoxical, because peroxides have a reputation for always being harmful. However, it now seems as though lipid peroxides, although indeed harmful in some situations, may be physiological regulators of cell division.
Some capsules of evening primrose oil contain Vitamin E as an anti-oxidant. However, studies have shown that Vitamin E in fact inhibits the toxic effects of GLA on malignant cells, so the best treatment for cancer would be large doses of evening primrose oil without the Vitamin E. Ideally, fish oils should also be taken. New clinical trials on cancer are using Efatnol Marine, instead of Efamol on its own.
2. It by-passes the delta-6-desaturase enzyme block. Cancer is a known blocking agent of the metabolic pathway of linoleic acid. This block occurs at the first step, between linoleic acid and gammalinolenic acid, by inhibiting the delta-6-desaturase enzyme. The GLA in evening primrose oil by-passes this block by starting at the second stage in the metabolic pathway This means that GLA can convert to DGLA and then to prostaglandin El without hindrance.
3. Prostaglandins. Another way in which polyunsaturated fatty acids might be controlling cancer cells is by being converted into prostaglandins. Prostaglandins derived from PUFAs may inhibit the proliferation of human and animal tumour cells, and reverse transformed cells.
Originally it was thought that it was only PGE1 which had anti-cancer properties, but it now seems that other prostaglandins are important too.
It must be stressed that all the above studies are preliminary, and although major clinical trials are planned, there are no results to date.
However, evening primrose oil is already widely used by alternative health centers and practitioners, such as the Bristol Cancer Help Centre, for patients with cancer. In these cases it is used as part of a whole treatment programme, often involving several nutrients and a fundamental change of diet.
It must be emphasized that people with cancer should not treat themselves, but should always seek the advice of a qualified practitioner.
The studies with GLA are exciting, but the situation at the moment is that no double-blind trial has yet shown it to be effective. Until such trials are done, anyone with cancer taking evening primrose oil can only hope it will help them.

BREAST CANCER: TREATMENT AND HOME REMEDIES
The course of breast cancer varies from woman to woman. Some women have recurrent cancer and die within a year of mastectomy. Mastectomy cures other women and still others survive for 10 or 15 years after mastectomy even though they have secondary cancer all through their bodies.
The average survival time of women who leave their breast cancer untreated is 2.7 years. About 3.6 per cent of untreated ladies will be alive at the end often years. With mastectomy the picture changes. About half of the women receiving surgical therapy will survive ten years.
Alternatives exist to the removal of a breast. Sufficient evidence favors cutting out of the malignant tumour, whilst preserving the breast. Radiotherapy and anti cancer drugs are further options. These alternatives may offer similar survival times to procedures involving the loss of a breast.
It is possible in this age of high technology and plastic surgery to fashion a breast from muscles of the abdominal wall and move that tissue with blood supply intact to the site of a lost breast. Nipples are also fashioned cosmetically from alternative bodily tissues.
The introduction of anti oestrogen drugs has made a dramatic difference to the group of post menopausal women with cancers whose growth is dependent upon oestrogen. By blocking the effects of oestrogen with drugs like Tamoxifen, sometimes the tumour mass completely regresses and just seems to shrink away.
Home Remedies
Non medical approaches can add to the survival times of women suffering from cancer of the breast. Women involving themselves with fellow sufferers in support groups have demonstrated a doubling of survival times. Before breast surgery, it is mandatory to be in control of whether or not the surgeon is to take off the breast, if an intended biopsy turns out to be positive. The normal surgical procedure goes on to mastectomy without awakening the patient. Thus a women’s first inkling that the biopsy was positive derives from the fact that she wakes up and her breast is gone.
A woman need not consent to a biopsy if the surgeon is not going to give her some time after a positive finding of breast cancer to think about the options. Given this time she may then decide to lose the breast and organize reconstruction or she may opt for the removal of cancer with preservation of the breast and immediate treatment by radiotherapy. ANTI-HEADACHE TIPS
A good way to start dealing with the problem of headaches is to keep a headache diary. Once you monitor your headaches to detect patterns of onset, it is easier to identify and eliminate the factors which cause them.
Pay particular attention to the type of foods you eat. Many fast foods and other highly processed foods, for example, contain food additives known to trigger headaches, especially migraines.
Don’t underestimate the role of good posture in headache prevention. Make sure your workplace furniture is ergonomically designed. LABORATORY STUDIES ON EVENING PRIMROSE OIL AND CANCER CELLS
Six different laboratories in four different countries have now obtained similar results: that polyunsaturated fatty acids normalize human cancer cells. Tests have been done on at least nine different human malignant cell lines, including cancers of the liver, bone, oesophagus, breast, prostate, and skin. In all these tests, the normal cells remained unaffected.
Studies on animal cell lines using evening primrose oil have also had very good results. A study of breast cancer in rats showed that tumour growth was inhibited in rats given evening primrose oil. These results agree with earlier findings which showed that the growth of a mammary tumour was significantly reduced in rats treated with evening primrose oil.
The amount of oil given is important. The rats were fed a normal rat chow diet containing 5% of total calories as fat. The results showed that there was a significant inhibition of tumour growth, but greater amounts of oil began to increase tumour growth.
Other studies have shown that when rats are fed a diet containing 20% saturated fat, tumour growth increased. This may be because essential fatty acids cannot compete with so much saturated fat, with the result that they do not get metabolized properly.
There does seem to be a causal relationship between fat intake and the occurrence of breast cancer. However, it seems that the kind of fat as well as how much fat are important influences on the incidence of breast cancer. These studies on rats may have important lessons for human breast cancer.
Research in South Africa (originally published in the South African Medical Journal) showed that gammalinolenic acid, taken from evening primrose oil, reduced cancer cell growth by up to 70%. GLA was added to three different types of malignant cell, both human and mouse. The mouse cancer cells were inhibited, and the human cancer cells taken from the oesophagus were killed. This research showed that although GLA was toxic to malignant cells, it had no such effect on normal cells.
The Newsletter of the Northwest Academy of Preventive Medicine published these comments along with the findings: ‘These data may have profound implications for the prevention and treatment of cancer. Whereas the usual method of fighting cancer is to destroy malignant cells, GLA may be capable of actually reversing, or retarding, the malignant process. Of prime importance is the fact that GLA is a normal metabolite and is essentially non-toxic’.

BREAST CANCER AND HOME REMEDIES
Cancer of the breast still threatens the lives of one in twelve Australian women. Little publicity surrounds the factors causing the appearance of breast cancer. Perhaps those factors would attract more attention if breast cancer was a disease of men; but it is not. Only one in a hundred cases of breast cancer will occur amongst the male population.
Excluding gender, the single most important variable in the development of breast cancer appears to be diet. A fat rich, low fibre western diet increases the risk of breast cancer by a factor of six times. High cholesterol alone doubles the chances of a woman developing cancer of the breast. Other factors of importance are age at the onset of periods, early onset of child bearing years, the taking of oestrogen tablets, a family history of breast cancer and the prior appearance of benign changes in the breast.
Looking at some of these risks in more detail women who start their periods before the age of 12 have nearly three times the risk of breast cancer compared to women who started their periods at age 14. Overall there is approximately a three fold increase in risk among first degree relatives of women who have breast cancer. However, among first degree relatives who had breast cancer before menopause or who had cancer in both breasts there is a staggering nine fold increase in risk.
Home Remedies
There is a clear and overriding imperative for more women to adopt a low fat, high fibre diet. The use of oestrogen, as Hormone Replacement Therapy (H.R.T.) after the menopause is still controversial concerning the risk of breast cancer. Current balance of opinion favours balancing oestrogen supplementation with progesterone. In any event, if H.R.T. is to be adopted, the reduced incidence of heart disease and osteoporosis will save more lives than any increase in the number of deaths caused by breast cancer.

HEADACHES FROM HELL: TENSION HEADACHES
It is estimated that four out of every five headaches can be classed as tension headaches. With the contraction of the muscles of the neck, scalp and face, pain begins as a dull ache or squeezing pain at the back of the head, spreading across the crown of the head to the forehead, often affecting one or both sides of the head. Tension headaches are characterised by a feeling of pressure, as though your head were being gently squeezed in a vice, not infrequently accompanied by muscle spasms in the neck or shoulder region.
Although the pressure may not be severe, the pain associated with tension headaches may persist for hours or even days, not unlike a nagging toothache. If the pain continues for too long, sleep can be disrupted, along with appetite, ability to work efficiently or interact socially. In such cases, the immune system can be weakened, making the headache sufferers vulnerable to illness.
Tension headaches may be brought on by stress, anxiety, even general frustration. More often than not, however, tension headaches result from the things we do to ourselves or let happen to us. Drinking too much alcohol is, for example, a major contributing factor to tension headaches, along with drug abuse, junk food intake, poor posture, weak neck and shoulder muscles, and inadequate rest, to name only a few.
People who work at keyboards or spend a large amount of their time in front of computer screens need to be especially aware of the additional stress they are placing upon the muscles of the eyes, neck and shoulders. Even a short break every half hour from a keyboard can make a difference in successfully avoiding tension headaches.

ALTERNATIVES TO HRT: ?NATURAL? PROGESTERONE AND OESTROGEN
You need to be aware that progesterone creams contain a powerful pharmaceutical hormone that is made in a laboratory. Because the US FDA (Food and Drug Administration) won’t allow the manufacturers of the creams to make medical claims, they are sold as cosmetics, not as hormone replacements. It is because these creams contain a pharmaceutical agent that the UK’s Medicines Control Agency will only let them be sold under prescription, and rightly so. My main concern is that women are being duped into thinking they are buying a natural herbal remedy containing wild yam. They are not: they are buying hormone replacement – just a different hormone (progesterone instead of the usual HRT combination of a form of oestrogen plus progestogen). And they may not be buying anything truly to do with wild yam, which has a very respectable reputation as a herbal treatment for menstrual and menopausal problems. Although for centuries, herbalists have indeed used wild yam in a tincture form, the effect of the herb in its pure state is very different from that of the synthesized progesterone. This wild yam is taken orally and has traditionally been used as an anti-spasmodic and anti-inflammatory herb. As is the case with so many effective herbs it is not known precisely how it acts on the body. Since the essence of herbal medicine is that all the ingredients help towards the overall therapeutic effect, diosgenin alone cannot be responsible for the wild yam’s beneficial qualities. Herbs work because they contain a host of substances – active substances, balancing substances and substances that cope with any side effects of the active substances. They are holistic and truly ‘natural’. But the ‘natural’ progesterone that is being hyped is no more ‘natural’ than a number of the plant-based oestrogen preparations that form the basis of some HRT products.
These oestrogens are ‘natural’ in the same sense that plant-based progesterone is classed as ‘natural’. The oestrogens too are synthesized in the laboratory from soya beans and yams. They still have side effects, however. We need to be clear that these hormones, oestrogen and progesterone, which are synthesized in a laboratory from plants, are not natural to us. They may be chemically identical to what our bodies produce but they are powerful drugs, hence the need to put them on prescription. Plant-based progesterone is termed ‘natural’ because it has the same molecular structure as the progesterone molecule found in humans. This idea of different substances being chemically identical can be very misleading. For example, coal, diamond and graphite (the ‘lead’ in your pencil) are all chemically identical and yet they have very different properties and functions. They have the same molecular structure, but you wouldn’t expect to produce much heat by putting diamonds on the fire.

EVENING PRIMROSE OIL AND CANCER
One of the exciting possibilities for evening primrose oil lies in its use in treating cancer. The aim of using evening primrose oil in the treatment of cancer is to normalize tumours by stopping the cancer cells from proliferating, without affecting healthy cells.
This is very different from the existing orthodox approach that uses chemotherapy and radiotherapy, in which the treatment is toxic to both cancerous and healthy cells, with unpleasant side-effects. Treatment with evening primrose oil has no unpleasant side-effects.
Studies done during the 1980s all confirm that the GLA in evening primrose oil stops cancer cells proliferating, and can normalize them. Most of these studies have been in the laboratory, on animal and human cancer cells. However, there have been a few clinical studies on humans with various types of cancer.
Preliminary studies in a few patients have shown promising results. One man with advanced lung cancer who was expected to live only four weeks survived for three years. Another man with bladder cancer, expected to live less than three months, was still alive and well three years later.
A doctor in South Africa has reported excellent results in four patients with astrocytoma (a kind of blood cancer), and two with mesathelioma.
But perhaps the most interesting results so far have been from a pilot study on six South African patients with liver cancer. In four patients, liver size decreased, and in two of these four patients this decrease was substantial.
Although five patients died, the mean survival time after diagnosis increased from 42 to 67 days. (This figure includes the survival time of two patients who were terminal on admission and died within days after the diagnoses were made.)
In all six cases symptomatic improvement was obvious, and quite striking improvement followed the start of the supplementation in three patients.
Only one patient entered the trial before the stage of severe clinical deterioration. He received Efamol for 172 days, and his clinical condition improved dramatically. This patient, a man aged 28, was admitted-having been treated unsuccessfully for some time by a traditional healer.
After diagnosis of primary liver cancer, his diet was supplemented with six capsules a day of Efamol for the first 30 days. After that it was increased to 18 capsules a day, and 8g of Vitamin a day were added as well. On day 127 Efamol was increased to 27 capsules a day, and the Vitamin kept at 8g a day. He received no other treatment.
This patient was discharged from hospital, given a supply of Efamol and Vitamin C, and asked to return six weeks later. Tests showed that the tumour in his liver had gone down considerably.
Apart from any anti-tumour effects, most patients taking evening primrose oil for cancer have reported a substantially increased sense of well-being. The patients volunteered this information spontaneously; it was an unexpected bonus of the evening primrose oil treatment. For patients with cancer, an increase in well-being is a great asset.
