REHABILITATION FROM HEART DISEASE: THE IMPORTANCE OF ADAPTIVE DENIAL
For day-to-day living, what affects our quality of life is the way we are feeling?at the moment. What we are aware of now becomes a crucial factor in our journey of life. We know that in a hundred years’ time we will not be around, and in a zillion years our solar system may not exist, but no wonder we choose not to locus on this. After what we have experienced during and after the cardiac event, it would seem natural to want to shut our worries about the future out of our minds, but it is not always easy to do this. During recovery, it is important that we not switch off our minds too much, as this can be to our detriment. In other words, we should not shut out or deny what we should be doing to get well. There is an important distinction here?between denial that is “adaptive” and “maladaptive.”
Adaptive denial means not being paralyzed by the future. As an example, if we focus on returning to normal immediately, we can be easily overwhelmed, as this rate of recovery is not achievable. If, instead, we focus on small, achievable gains (“I will walk around the block once tomorrow”) and disregard for the moment that we are, at present, partially disabled, we are practicing adaptive denial. When Rose does not worry unduly, but follows her treatment regimen, she is engaged in adaptive denial.
If we pretend that all is perfect, that we do not need to make any effort to change any aspect of our lives, we are in maladaptive denial. When Tony does not follow his doctor’s recommendations and neglects his diet, fails to exercise as he should and resumes smoking, he shows maladaptive denial.
As long as you are following your medical treatment, it is quite acceptable not to focus unduly on your long-term concerns. We say “unduly” because, if you have a particular concern, you should deal with it?just not obsessively. This is where apportionment of time is a judicious thing. In other words, now and then give yourself a break and forget your troubles.
