TRIED AND TRUE RELAXATION TECHNIQUES FOR A BETTER HEART: TUNING OUT THE NOISE
The first few times I got a massage, I found my mind wandering. Rather than enjoying the skilful ministrations of my masseuse, I kept thinking about work back at the office, bills that had to be paid, and a million and one other things.
Needless to say, that same problem affected me when I’d do some deep breathing or other techniques as well. And many others report having the same difficulty when they try to relax. The fact of the matter is that most of us just have not been conditioned to fully relax; rather, we’ve learned to remain alert and instantly reactive. No teacher ever rewarded a pupil for staring out the window and daydreaming during the math or spelling lesson. You don’t get ahead in your career by thinking of last week’s golf outing while attending a sales meeting. No wonder we can’t concentrate on relaxation!
The tip I’m about to pass along to you came not from a learned university teacher or an experienced Ph.D psychologist. I thank my masseuse for this one. Picture your mind as a radio capable of tuning in many channels. What do you want to listen to on your radio? You can twist the tuning knob to pleasant memories of a walk in the woods, or the sounds of a waterfall, the music in the room, your own deep breathing, or the sensations of your muscles as they relax. Or you can tune in to the noise, the static, of interference such as pressing business, family disturbances and medical bills to be paid. You have control over the dial.
You really do have a choice. Your mind is not pre-programmed. You don’t have to listen to the noise. Tune that static out. Listen, instead, to the rhythms of your breath going in and out. Picture it as something physical that you can see and feel with each inhalation and exhalation. Allow yourself to return to that childhood innocence when daydreaming was a worthwhile activity.
