HOW DOES THE BLOOD CHOLESTEROL AFFECT THE ARTERY?
We have recently learned a good deal about blood cholesterol and the artery. Cholesterol (and the cholesterol-carrying lipoproteins) in atherosclerotic arteries comes from blood plasma; some of the cholesterol of blood plasma slowly diffuses into the wall of the artery. In healthy individuals cholesterol leaves the artery and returns to the plasma at the same rate. Drs Niehaus and Nicoll at St Thomas’ Hospital, London, have measured the rate at which the LDL, the main cholesterol-carrying lipoprotein, enters the wall of the artery from plasma, by using minute amounts of radioactive lipoproteins. The higher the level of LDL in blood plasma, the more rapidly does this cholesterol-rich substance accumulate in the artery.
Another possible link is that some lipoproteins can stimulate cells in the artery wall to divide. The increased number of cells contributes to the thickening of the wall which is seen in diseased coronary arteries.
