MINERAL ESSENTIALS: SELENIUM
Facts:
Vitamin E and selenium are synergistic. This means that the two together are stronger than the sum of the equal parts.
Both vitamin E and selenium are antioxidants, preventing or at least slowing down aging and hardening of tissues through oxidation.
Males appear to have a greater need for selenium. Almost half their body’s supply concentrates in the testicles and portions of the seminal ducts adjacent to the prostate gland. Also, selenium is lost in the semen.
No official dietary allowance has yet been set for this mineral, but the general dosage is between 50 and 100 mcg. It is not advisable to exceed 200 mcg. daily.
What it can do for you:
Aid in keeping youthful elasticity in tissues. Alleviate hot flushes and menopausal distress. Help in treatment and prevention of dandruff. Possibly neutralize certain carcinogens and provide protection from some cancers.
Deficiency disease: Premature stamina loss.
Best natural sources: Wheat germ, bran, tuna fish, onions, tomatoes, broccoli.
Supplements:
Available in small microgram doses. 25 to 50 mcg. is most often used. Also available combined with vitamin E and other antioxidants. Natural foods supply sufficient amounts when eaten regularly.
Toxicity:
Doses above 5 parts per million can be toxic.
Enemies:
Food-processing techniques.
Personal advice:
Selenium was discovered only a little more than twenty years ago. We’ve just begun to recognize its importance in human nutrition. Until more is known, I advise taking only moderate supplements.
