ALTERNATIVE TREATMENTS FROM NATURE’S PHARMACY
Before rushing out and buying drugs for minor exercise injuries and discomforts, take a look at what nature’s pharmacy has to offer Keep in mind that these suggestions are not prescriptive, nor are they meant to substitute for professional medical care.
Athlete’s Foot
A hazard for anyone who frequents a public gym, this fungus infection responds very well to vitamin powder or crystals applied directly to the affected area. Until the infection clears, it’s best to keep your feet dry and out of shoes as much as possible.
Broken Bones
Naturally, you need a doctor to set a broken bone, but you can alleviate the frustration of waiting for it to mend by accelerating healing time with vitamins and minerals. My advice for getting back on your feet or into the swing is to increase your calcium and vitamin D intake. Daily supplements of calcium, 1,000-1,500 mg; and vitamin D, 400-800 IU should do the trick.
For discomfort or pain during healing, try drinking chamomile, comfrey, or ginseng tea.
Bruises
Bruises are bound to occur if you’re active in sports, but taking a vitamin complex, 1,000 mg. (with bioflavonoids, rutin, and hesperidin) three times daily will help prevent capillary fragility as well as speed up the healing of those black-and-blue marks.
A poultice made from comfrey, or a compress, applied externally, using comfrey tea, will usually relieve any pain.
Leg Pains
If you’re prone to these, increase your calcium. I’d suggest a chelated calcium-and-magnesium tablet, choline 500 mg., vitamin complex 100 mg., and a chelated multiple mineral, taken with breakfast and dinner. Also vitamin E (dry form) 400 -1,000 IU, one to three times daily. (Many sufferers from twitchy legs have found vitamin E enormously helpful.)
Muscle Soreness
For that ache-all-over feeling after a workout, or when specific muscles hurt from being pushed too hard, a vitamin E supplement, 400-1,000 IU, taken one to three times daily and a chelated multiple mineral taken with breakfast and dinner can help.
Sprains
Keep R I.C.E. in mind – Rest, Immobilization, Cold compresses, and Elevation to minimize swelling. Sprains are injuries to ligaments and tendons surrounding joints, and generally occur when the joint is forced into motion beyond its range. Since the signs of sprains – pain intensified by motion, swelling, tenderness and often discoloration – are similar to fractures, it’s important to elevate and immobilize the afflicted area, apply cold compresses, and contact a doctor.
Do not apply heat for the first twenty-four to forty-eight hours. This can increase swelling and pain. After that, though, warm or comfortably hot compresses or soaks are suggested because these will promote circulation.
To speed healing, I’d recommend the following supplements:
? Vitamin E (dry form), 400 IU, 1-3 times daily
? Vitamin complex, 1,000 mg, a.m. and p.m.
? High-potency multiple chelated mineral, a.m. and p.m.
? High-potency multiple vitamin with chelated minerals, a.m. and p.m.
