EXERCISES AND DRUGS YOU SHOULD NEVER MIX
Before engaging in any strenuous exercise that can raise body temperature, check with your physician – especially if you are taking any of the following medications:
Antispasmodics or anticholinergics (drugs used to relieve 9 intestinal cramping) containing atropine.
? Antihistamines (drugs for allergies). These can cause drowsiness, affect concentration, and possibly elevate blood pressure dangerously during exercise.
? Benztropine mesylate.
? Propanalol.
? Scopolamine, scopolamine hydrobromide.
? Chlorpromazine.
? Tricyclic antidepressants (amitriptyline, despiramine, imipramine, nortriptyline, and protriptyline).
? MAO inhibitors (usocarboxazid, phenelzine, tranylcypromine).
? Inhalation anesthetics (ether, haothane, nitrous oxide).
? Glutethimide.
? Amphetamines (central nervous system stimulants).
? Diuretics (drugs that increase urine secretion). These, combined with body water and salt lost through perspiration, can cause dehydration.
? Any over the counter decongestant.
? Anticoagulants (blood thinners). These become more effective when the body temperature is raised.
? Digitalis (a small 2-degree rise in body temperature can make this heart medication 10-15 percent more toxic).
? Chloramphenicol. This topical antibiotic ointment becomes less effective as temperature rises, and if you or the weather gets really hot, the medication can cause bacteria to grow faster.
? Caffeine. This is a vasoconstrictor and should be ingested sparingly during exercise, especially in hot weather.
? Antihypertensive (high blood pressure) medications can become more effective with heat and lower blood pressure too much.
