OVER THE COUNTER DRUGS: DRUGS CONTAINING ACETAMINOPHEN AND IBUPROFEN
Drugs Containing Acetaminophen
Possible Side Effects:
? Stomach upset
? Skin rash
? Hives
? Fever
? Injury to mucous membranes
? Reduced amounts of white blood cells and platelets in blood
? Liver damage (if taken in high doses)
? Anemia
Drug Interactions
Can cause liver damage if you’re a regular alcohol drinker or on alcohol-containing medicines (which most cough syrups are).
Drugs Containing Ibuprofen
Possible Side Effects:
? Intestinal bleeding
? Hives
? Asthma attacks
? Aggravate high blood pressure
? Can cause kidney failure in susceptible individuals (diabetics, the elderly)
? Dizziness and tinnitus (ringing in the ears)
? Bloated feeling, heartburn, constipation and/or diarrhea
Drug Interactions:
? Can react adversely with alcohol, alcohol-containing medications and aspirin
? Can cause kidney problems if taken with diuretics (water pills)
Caution: If you are allergic to aspirin (or other salicylates), do not take this medication without consulting your doctor. Virtually the same side effects, cautions, and drug interactions for aspirin can be applied to ibuprofen.
