FITNESS FOR ALL: ABOUT COOLING DOWN AND HOW MUCH EXERCISES IS ENOUGH
What’s So Hot About Cooling Down?
After strenuous exercise, a cooling down period is essential. In fact, stopping abruptly can be dangerous, and for some people possibly fatal.
Strenuous exercise should be followed by a gradual cooling down period to prevent a buildup of catecholamine, blood chemicals that are particularly dangerous to anyone whose heart is sensitive to stress.
The easiest way to cool down after exercise is simply to walk slowly for a while and then rest supine (on your back).
If you’ve recently suffered an injury, a cold compress or a cool soak after your cool-down period can be helpful.
How To Tell When Enough Is Too Much
If there’s one thing I always try to emphasize, it’s this: Exercise should make you feel better, not worse!
You may be pushing yourself too hard if after workouts . . .
? you become extremely tired;
? you become easily irritable;
? you have trouble sleeping, even though exhausted;
? your heart is still pounding and you have trouble catching your breath ? long after you’ve stopped exercising.
If you notice any of these symptoms – slow down! Give your body time to adjust. If you sense that they are occurring regularly, check with your doctor to find out why you and your, exercises are not compatible.
Warning: Discontinue any exercise immediately if you experience tightness or pain in the chest, severe breathlessness, light-headedness, dizziness, loss of muscle control, or nausea.
Do not resume exercise without consulting a physician!
