INHALER TECHNIQUE FOR ASTHMATIC CHILDREN: PRESSURIZED INHALER
It is estimated that about 55 per cent of children do not use their inhalers correctly. This means that not only do they not obtain the full benefit from them, but it is much more likely that a serious or even life-threatening attack will develop. Sometimes the inhalers may even be discarded as useless.
By using the following steps the maximum benefit can be obtained:
Pressurized inhaler
1. Remove the mouthpiece cover.
2. Shake the inhaler vigorously before use.
3. Hold the inhaler upright and breathe out as far as possible.
4. Place the mouthpiece in your mouth between your teeth and close your lips firmly round it without biting.
5. Just after starting to breathe in through your mouth, press down on top of the inhaler to release the medication while still breathing in steadily and deeply.
6. Hold your breath, take the inhaler from your mouth and continue holding your breath for as long as is comfortable. This is vital because if you blow out too quickly the drug will not be retained long enough in the lungs to be effective.
7. If you are to take a second dose, then wait about fifteen to twenty seconds before repeating steps 2-6.
8. After use always replace the mouthpiece to keep out dust and fluff.
It is important not to rush this procedure, and if you see a mist coming from the top of the inhaler then you are either not breathing in deep enough or are pressing the inhaler at the wrong moment. A little practice will soon correct this problem.
