INHALER TECHNIQUE FOR ASTHMATIC CHILDREN: AEROLIN AUTOHALER, TURBOHALER AND ROTAHALER
Aeroline autohaler
1. Remove the mouthpiece cover.
2. Shake the inhaler vigorously.
3. Place the mouthpiece in your mouth between your teeth without biting.
4. Take a deep breath in. This will release a measured dose into your mouth.
5. Hold your breath for as long as possible.
You will see this is identical to the pressurized inhalers except that it is breath-activated, and so does not need to be pressed as a breath in is taken.
Turbohaler
1. Shake the inhaler vigorously.
2. Twist the bottom of the inhaler first one way and then back again.
3. Place the mouthpiece in your mouth without biting it.
4. Take a deep breath in, and as the device is breath-activated a measured dose of powder will be inhaled into the lungs.
5. Hold your breath for as long as possible.
Rotahaler
1. Ensure that the capsules are dry.
2. Push the capsule into the special slot in the bottom of the rotahaler.
3. Twist the middle of the rotahaler forwards and backwards. This slices the capsule in half, releasing the powder.
4. Place the mouthpiece in your mouth between your teeth and close your lips round it without biting.
5. Take deep, strong sucks so the powder enters the lungs.
6. Remove the old capsule and shake out any little bits of powder remaining.
Again it is important not to rush the procedure. Two deep sucks should be sufficient if the technique is correct. If it takes more than this, then an incorrect method is being used. Try not to let your child suck and blow alternatively as this will make the capsules damp with saliva.
