Steroids
As well as using bronchodilators it may also be necessary to reduce the swelling of the airway linings. The only effective method is to use steroids, which are usually given in the form of cortisone. Many parents gasp when I suggest this, but in actual fact when given over a short period of time they do not have any harmful side-effects. Taken in inhaler form, like Ventolin or Bricanyl, they will never cause unwanted effects. If administered as tablets it takes over six weeks of continuous usage before the child runs into problems; usually only a five-day course is needed. The steroid inhaler I would recommend is Becotide, which is made in differing strengths dependent on the child’s age and severity of the asthma. They also make a solution for use in the nebulizer. By having the right medication available and by using the correct technique, I am confident that everyone who follows the treatment plan will quickly be able to settle their child’s attacks.
